The most range this thing will have is 290 miles. That's kind of disappointing.

The trim-level names for the five EV9 models listed remain a mystery, but the document states that the two lower trims will come with rear-wheel drive, 200 horsepower, and 250 pound-feet of torque. The base model will apparently start around $56,000, providing 220 miles of range and a claimed 8.5 second 60-mph time but with no towing capacity. Stepping up to the $61,000 RWD trim, which presumably has a larger battery pack, lets you tow 2000 pounds and adds an extra 70 miles of range at the expense of 0.4 seconds in the sprint to 60 mph.

Opting for all-wheel drive will set you back at least $63,000, but this upgraded powertrain allegedly brings 400 horsepower and 380 pound-feet. Range drops to 260 miles, but towing capacity jumps to 3500 pounds and the 60-mph time is slashed to 6.0 seconds. Paying $68,000 for the next trim up adds 20-inch wheels in place of the standard 19s, cutting range to 240 miles.

The top trim, at $73,000, features the same range estimate, but torque is boosted to 480 pound-feet and the claimed dash to 60 mph goes down to 5.2 seconds. The towing capacity increases to 4500 pounds. This version also gets black 21-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and an extra 0.4 inches of ground clearance.

And only 200hp for the single motor, for a big heavy vehicle? I guess that explains the 8.9 second run to 60.
260 miles range for the AWD with 19s.
It must have an "eco-friendly" pedal assist to help it up the big hills.

Haha , what a dog. Unfortunately they will become like “luxury prius” and clog up the left lanes on the interstates . Good times..

That was my thought - I mean, that's the hp of our Leaf Plus! Most crossover EVs have more hp than that. I'm not a hp guy, but I would expect more from a full-sized SUV. If it weren't for the fact it was published by Car & Driver, I'd doubt the document was real, based on it being a pretty stupid decision for Kia to make.

It probably comes down to economics. They want to make a more affordable 3 row EV. If they fit it with the same dual motor set up as the EV6 GT and a huge pack it would have the HP but it may push into Rivian R1S price range(maybe it already is?). And that's not a place Kia wants to be. If it's an electric Telluride, 250 miles may be enough to sell a ton.

So strange to launch this car with a puny battery. What is the thinking here? Could be seven layers of tactic going on here of course, e.g. chicken run with battery suppliers, marketing ploy, competitor prodding etc. Anyway, it is probably a seven-seater so maybe the ultimate bang for the buck soccer mom car?

It's a big vehicle. Hard to make them efficient, especially when they land on such a boxy design that doesn't look very aerodynamic. But lots of people would rather buy something that doesn't look like an egg.

Would prefer to have something from KIA, but one would hope C/D fact checked this with them before publishing. Something like hey we are going to put this out there, let us know if it's wrong. I think we might see an EV9 Super Bowl commercial.

I find it telling that it has been out on the web for two days now and no refutation from Kia...

I think the problem is that Hyundai/Kia is using the same battery pack/drivetrain in all their EVs as a way to make development quicker and save cost. The EV9/Ioniq7 should have been designed with a 100+kWh battery pack.

Also the article mentions that the semi-autonomous ADAS will be another $4800 option above these trim levels listed.
