My build lock date has changed from Q1 to March 20. Currently I have Big Sur Blue as exterior paint option, generally I go with black (more than half the cars I have owned in the past were black). Since BSB is a free option, I'm torn between Black and BSB.

I don't apply PPF to my cars and apply DIY Ceramic coating for easy care. Is Matte finish maintenance very hard? Can I do a DIY Ceramic coating on a matte finish? Also, I read everywhere that it's very hard to fix even a minor scratch in a matte finish and sometimes it hurts resale value.

Thoughts?

AH! The BSB paradox.
We have all been down this road.
Nearly every one of us has never had matte paint, but the Ocean is so stunning, we have become minor experts in reading up on care/pitfalls.
First, it is not difficult. Hand wash only, specific products, NEVER buff, NO CARWASHES.
I will envy those who go for it, but alas it is Mariana for us.
Mariana is bsb with clear coat afterall.
A minor scratch CANNOT be fixed. DIY ceramic is an unknown to me however, sorry.

Matt color is a regular paint without clear coat so you can go at the carwashes but WITHOUT wax, only soap. DIY ceramic cannot be applied on a matt color.

I'm going with the PPF over everything except the roof. Hope to post photos/video as soon as the One is delivered. Will go with touch-free car washes.

Even with BSB being a free choice for my One, I'm avoiding it. If I had to install a full car PPF to protect it, that's pretty expensive (I got quotes from $7000 to over $9000). I'm getting Mariana with just a front PPF and ceramic on everything else ($2500-3200).

I intend to get PPF done for full front(bumpers and fenders). For the rest, I intend to do DIY ceramic. 2 products available for Matte, Gyeon & Dr Beasley. Check it out. Dr Beasley is more expensive but covers a longer period(5 years) vs Gyeon(24months).
I didn't aware of this new DIY ceramic for matte finish!!! So cool but a lot of work, should ask a professionnal to do it. 😕

Matte paint (on the OCEAN) most definitely has a clear coat and can definitely have a ceramic coating applied.

This is a great option! Will it protect BSB from rocks/dings/chips? No, most likely not- but it will 100% protect from irritants like salt, bird deux deux, light road grime and sandy spray from truck tires.
$2500 for PPF front end and matte ceramic for remainder is well worth it. After 3-4 years if there is damage you can always get car wrapped in another color.

Maintenance on a Matte finished car isn't hard but it requires a lot of care. You have to use PH Neutral soap and you have to make sure to take off any bugs and bird poop off quickly or it will stain. You don't have a clear coat to protect your paint. Scratches and swirls are 100x harder to fix because you can't grab an orbital, put on a foam or microfiber pad and grab your favorite compound. You also can't just take the car through any car wash.

I switched from Blue Planet to Big Sur Blue because I wanted something different, but I also knew that it's going to require a lot of care. I'll be getting the entire car covered in PPF the second it gets delivered.

We should hold monthly regional BSB detail parties. Everyone meet at a certain place and we will share/exchange cleaning products, power washers and matte-approved ceramic wax.

I can deal with the hand washing as I never run my cars through carwash. However, my OCD won't let those minor scratches slide which usually can buff out on a gloss finish.😬 Damn! I still want BSB though. I still have 12 days to think it over.

I'm getting the BSB One's PPF done at a place a mile from home immediately post-delivery in Q2). Their tech does all the MBenz new cars, so I'm comfortable with his experience level. It's an investment but will be worth it in terms of peace of mind with tree sap, bird poop, highway rock chips, and the frequent cleaning needed in New England. I'm about an hour south of Boston if anyone is interested in a referral.

Thank you all!
What city and state are you in? I may be able to help you find someone. I deal with detailers across the country.
Thanks everyone 🙏!! For now, configured BSB and planning to take a chance. I'm buying Ocean instead of mainstream EV brand to be unique and different. I guess having BSB will it make it even more unique 😁.

@HotIce Please let me know if you have any dealer contacts in Bay Area surroundings. Don't mind driving couple of hours to get a quality work.
