Rivian put out updated delivery estimates yesterday. My R1S delivery estimate was pushed out another year (!) to 1H 2024. It looks like Rivian is either going to prioritize higher margin newer orders (under the revised pricing) or they are expecting continued struggles with plowing through their backlog. (Or maybe they are just being conservative. Who knows? The joys of EV start-ups.)

Did you just get the updated schedule? I received an email a couple months ago just stating "2024" and now have "January-June 2024" so figured production was actually improving now.

Yes, got the update last night. Was Apr-Jun 2023 then 3Q 2023 after last update, now 1H 2024. Reservation date Nov 2021. (I live less than 15 miles from Service Center so have that in our favor but committed the rookie error of changing our color after the last update so, as the Rivian email reminded us yesterday... "It’s important to note that changing your configuration will almost always result in your delivery estimate moving back." I think we are in the changed-your-mind-penalty box)

My ETA has remained the same for 3 updates now. Similar config to yours but I ordered July/August 2021.
Envious. I am hoping we will get bumped up next update. I think the move from Green & OC to Compass Yellow & BM cost us.

Mine is still Apr-June 2023, only problem is don't have money to afford both One and R1S. Need to decide soon on what to do with R1S reservation. Unfortunately can't cancel One and lose $5K.

Buy the R1S and trade it for the One.... IF you live in a state where sales tax is charged on the price difference between trade and new.

If you are in CA... financially it would be harder to do. I'd personally stick with the R1S unless you truly want a "compact" SUV.

Can't blame Rivian Motors for "Jumping the Line" and building the more expensive Rivian model which cost the consumer more dollars

If my new fandangled widget costs me $1.00 and I have ONE MILLION orders
and my cost of production is $1.25, THEN I may have a problem staying in business!!

"Some R1S SUV orders placed after March 2022
— when Rivian hiked prices about 20% —
are now slated to be filled before less-expensive orders placed earlier,"

Just look at the latest Rivian Quarter Sales Report....
As of the last report (Q3),
Rivian brought in just over $500 million in revenue from selling a few thousand EVs,
but it cost them almost $1.5 billion to build those EVs.

I agree. Rivian has just made a complete mess of this pricing and it was totally unnecessary. They need to find a happy medium that will let them get incremental margin and deliver vehicles. If I were leading Rivian I would simply raise prices and tell people it is too damn bad and they need to suck it up or cancel.

I would do a loyalty discount where everyone pays current prices minus 1% for each month they ordered early (before March 2022) until they get to the original prices (which are a 18% lower than today for the R1S). You ordered in Nov 2021 5% discount. March 2021 12% discount. Etc. Clear out the long time backlog at a lower cost and higher margin.

Alternatively, they could (if they can make them) offer a grandfathered pricing customers the option to switch to a dual motor for the same price and speed up delivery. I would snag that in a second. That would be a great compromise for everyone (I would give up an $8k option in exchange for earlier delivery).

RJ made a mess of this and needs to get it cleared out. That said, the fundamental problem is their manufacturing cost. They need to get that fixed. The guy they hired does not seem up to the job.

Buy the One and sell it to me 😀

I wish I had a One reservation.

I love the idea of a max pack R1S, but my wife and I go to Mammoth every other weekend in the winter from Newport Beach. We either need a car that adds range quickly, we currently make the drive in an AWD long range Tesla model 3, or we need something that has lots of range. If the reports on the One/Extreme are accurate, i.e. that it gets 350 miles with 100kwh, than that works perfectly for us. I also like the reported size of the One, namely about the size of a Range Rover Velar.

It is really too bad to hear about all of this with Rivian. I'm sorry for all of you guys that keep getting things pushed back. I've thought about putting in a reservation for a max pack R1T, but I have no confidence that it will ever happen.

Going to Mammoth is my biggest worry about getting rid of the Tesla. There are very few CCS locations on 395 with only one real location between Mojave and Bishop; and that location (Coso Junction) seems scary. Still no CCS locations in Mammoth (and barely any J1772 options either). I am planning on taking the ID.4 up next time to see how it goes. If the ID.4 can handle it, the extra 100 mile range will make it a no brainer.
