Going to Mammoth is my biggest worry about getting rid of the Tesla. There are very few CCS locations on 395 with only one real location between Mojave and Bishop; and that location (Coso Junction) seems scary. Still no CCS locations in Mammoth (and barely any J1772 options either). I am planning on taking the ID.4 up next time to see how it goes. If the ID.4 can handle it, the extra 100 mile range will make it a no brainer.
Yeah, it's pretty easy for us in the Tesla at this point.

Honestly, the Coso Jct spot doesn't seem as sketchy to me as the Inyokern Tesla charger, but we usually drive up early in the morning. We have our schedules set up for 3 day weekends every other week, so we are usually hitting the charging spots in the daylight. I think a CCS right where the 395 and 14 meet would be great. Also, they really need one in Mammoth Lakes. With the Tesla I can usually arrive with around 15%, then after skiing the day we arrive we will head down to charge and get groceries at the grocery outlet. If not, we'll go get coffee and maybe some pasteries at Looney Bean and charge while we do that. We can usually leave Mammoth with at least 50-60% battery, often more.

With a non-Tesla vehicle that will mean a much longer charge in Bishop. It's definitely not ideal for efficiency, but hopefully it will work. Electify America has to be looking towards putting one in Mammoth Lakes, or at least I hope they are.

I do know Tesla chargers will be opened up to non-Tesla vehicles, but I don't know how long, or what the logistics will be, before that happens.

I'm curious to see how the ID.4 does.

Yeah, the Inyokern Charger is bad. We usually charge at Bishop on the way back to be able to stop at Mercado Mexico across the street (we will be able to take full advantage of the Taco Tray with the Ocean there). The issue with Coso Jct is that the store has been under construction for 2 years now but should be open by the time we get our Oceans (and looks like there will be a Subway and Chester's Chicken once they do open). It would be nice if there were more than 4 stalls.

It looks like a 2nd Tesla Supercharger is permitted for Mammoth but still no indication of any CCS; luckily, it is under a 10% consumption from Mammoth to Bishop as is mostly downhill. Still don't have a lot of faith in Tesla opening up to CCS (but if it does, the new location would likely be a candidate).

Last winter (traveling back from Christmas 2021) I saw a Rivian charging and talked to the guy. He actually worked at Rivian, and in talking to him about the coming R1S he said that they would be emphasizing the EDV. Now, he did NOT say that they would be scaling back their passenger vehicles, but I did come away with the impression that the R1T/S would be a side-business going forward.

FWIW, talking to guys at Rivian forum it looks like people who are paying full-price are getting accelerated delivery dates (one guy moved up almost a year) and people who are discounted are getting spread out.

Rivian just announced their max pack R1S, supposed to get 390 miles EPA. No pricing or estimated delivery on it yet, so Fisker probably will keep the "under $70,000" range crown for now.

Also, Rivian will be offering max pack only in Dual Motor config not in Quad motor, for R1T they up-charge $10K premium for max pack. If they keep same premium for R1S then it would start at $94K + additional for options (paint, interior color, underbody shield, tires etc) so price can go upto $104K+.

Ocean will retain the crown of long range king under $70,000 for a year or two easily.

I am super-excited to see the new R1S offerings.

Dual Motor LR 340 Miles $84k
Quad Motor LR 321 Miles $92k
Dual Motor MP 390 Miles $94k

I would gladly trade our quad-motor pre-order for a dual motor pre-order LR for the same price. I would gladly pay an upgrade fee to move it to a dual motor max pack. I am hoping we will see some options along those lines.

Are you talking about trading pre-hike quad motor price for a dual motor LR?
  1. Personally I don't the see value of trading quad motor for dual motor LR just for 25+ miles additional range?
  2. If I can trade for dual motor max pack (with +2K difference), I may think about it.
  3. Most importantly I will lose $7,500 EV tax credit/rebate if I switch to Dual motor so it's a no go for me.

Yes, I was talking about trading the pre-hike quad motor. I have that at 75,500. Personally, I seem minimal value in the quad vs the dual. I would rather have the extra 25 miles with the performance upgrade to get 3.5 second 0-60. I agree with you that a fee to move to max pack is also something I would do. There is definitely an offer here that would get a number of people to move. Obviously everyone has their own priorities and for some, the quad motor is most important.

The tax credit is another point. I am mentally giving up on that now that my expect delivery date was moved to 2024. I agree that you would probably lose it (if, that is, we are even eligible to get it, which, who knows?) by changing models.

Rivian joins the EV recall club....

Rivian has been in this club for a while. This is #4 Recalls are just part of the automotive world especially for new models. For example:
  • 2022 Mach-E - 3 Recalls
  • 2022 Audi e-Tron GT 6 Recalls
  • 2021 Porsche Taycan 11 Recalls
  • 2022 BMW iX 5 recalls
  • 2022 BMW i4 5 recalls
  • 2022 Tesla Model Y - 11 Recalls (n.b. 2 actual recalls and 9 software updates)
